REVIEW- Out of the Dust
by Brian Thornley
This book is a masterpiece, a well-written book which deserves far more than just the John Newberry Medal it got. It has taste, it has poetry, it has sense, it has history- but it's lacking something. My first impression after the first few chapters was that it would be an okay book- but where was the great storyline that kept you hanging on- wanting to know what would happen? It took a while to pick up the pace, but when I read the end, knew that it needed the begining it had. It was solid, and established quite a bit of facts that led up to more story.
Though back in the begining, at least before the thirtieth chapter, I was still waiting for the plotline to pick up- then I realized I had been missing the plot- it had been right underneath my nose. The story was trying to make me think, and boy did it ever. I thought about the issues it brought up, and how money was worth more back then. It was that kind of book that made you think. The storyline finally started to pick up, and after Ma died, the book kept getting better and better. Though the chapters were short, they held on to me, and wouldn't let me go! It was like reading a historical book, which I love.
Though I think it was a great book, it is not one that I would want to re-read. It's not my kind of story. It was brilliantly written, etc... but it was not the type of story I would want to buy. Though if you like to read stories about depression and tough times and dust, this is the story for you. If you like stories that are action-packed, full of car chases and that leave you on the edge of your seat wanting more, then my friend, I wouldn't recommend it.
